Patrick Shannon

Biography

Inspired by his cultural upbringing, Patrick endeavours to use technology and media to empower locals in addressing the social & cultural issues within Canada’s Indigenous communities. He has a decade of experience working within the Vancouver film, television and design industries, and currently operates a multimedia creative studio based out of Haida Gwaii, Canada.

Patrick’s passion for discovering new ways to strengthen his culture comes in the form of storytelling through film and media. This passion continues into his work with youth as Patrick mentors young Indigenous and settler filmmakers while providing many opportunities for them to get experience in film.

2019 | Artstate

Patrick was invited as a keynote speaker at Artstate in Tamworth, NSW, Australia to present on the development of new Indigenous creative economies and the responsibilities of colonial nations

2019 | World Culture Summit

Patrick was invited as a panelist speaker at the World Summit on Arts & Culture in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to speak about the role of arts & culture in creating a more equitable and just society for marginalized voices

2018 | Zaccheus Jackson Nyce Memorial Award

Patrick was selected for the Zaccheus Jackson Nyce Memorial Award at the 2018 Verses Festival of Words in Vancouver, BC as an embodiment of community dedication and spirit within Vancouver’s spoken word scene

2017 | Salzburg Young Cultural Innovator

Patrick was selected as a delegate of 50 Young Cultural Innovators from around the world to attend the Salzburg Global Forum in Salzburg, Austria, an initiatives that brings people from around the world to build networks in addressing the worlds problems

2017 | BC Tech Summit

Patrick was invited as a keynote speaker at the BC Technology Summit in Vancouver, BC to talk about the future of technology and media in Northern BC

Patrick was invited to speak as a panelist for aspiring young Indigenous entrepreneurs at the 2015 Young Entrepreneur Symposium in Richmond, BC

2015 | Young Entrepreneur of the Year

The BC Aboriginal Business Awards selected Patrick as Young Entrepreneur of the Year for his business EVIL Patrick by Design

2015 | Zaccheus Jackson Nyce Spirit of the Slam Award

Patrick was awarded with the Zaccheus Jackson Nyce Spirit of the Slam award as an acknowledgment of continued work and support of local poetry and community spirit

2014 | Social Innovation Finalist

Futurpreneur Canada selected Patrick’s social enterprise Project Regen as a finalist for the Thrive North Business Challenge

2013 | Top 15 Emerging Innovators in Canada

Patrick was selected as one of the Top 15 Emerging Innovators in Canada by Ashoka Changemakers and American Express for the social enterprise Project Gwaii, and was invited to take part in a social innovation bootcamp at the Centre For Social Innovation in Toronto, ON
