January-March 2021Review

Blog Header - 2020 Recap-2.jpg

The first 3 months of 2021 have been deadlier than ever for InnoNative! We’re excited to tell you about some new projects, films, awards, and initiatives. Read on below!

January

If you haven’t already heard InnoNative has teamed up with Indigenous model and community activist, Joleen Mitten to found an amazing new high-end boutique Indigenous Modelling Agency, called Supernaturals Modelling. In this partnership, InnoNative will be the official photography and filmmaking partner. In early January we filmed a pitch video for Supernaturals to apply for funding and… (drum roll please) it was successful! We are just about to launch the SuperNaturals website and are stoked to share this new project with you.

For all of you waiting to hear more about DUC (The Deadly Uncle Show), we have big things coming! We put out a casting call in early January for Indigenous voice actors and we’ve assembled an even bigger and more amazing crew than we could have imagined! We are in the process of working on our first season… more to come on this soon!

Later in the month, we filmed a promo video for IBDS (Indigenous Business Development Services) for an upcoming project as part of their online education program.

After this shoot, Patrick hit the road and headed to Port Hardy and Coal Harbour, B.C. where he spent 10 days teaching a University course for the University Of Victoria. While in Coal Harbour, Patrick and his collaborator Elin Dieme took to a small cottage off the beaten track with no wifi, and set up to produce “Odota Minua” a short film based on the story of a young Nordic woman and her relationship with the sea after a traumatic experience. For an hour, every day for 5 days from 4pm-5pm just as the sun was starting to set, they would head out to film. Inspired by the perfect lighting, misty skies, and the dark Maritime feel that Coal Harbour offered, they produced the entire film in one week. Elin wrote and starred in the film, while Patrick directed, shot and edited. After they captured their content they had a quick 2-day trip in Victoria, solely focused on editing!

Since Odota Minua was first submitted to festivals in March, it has been officially selected for the Montreal Film Festival, Toronto International Women Film Festival, Venice Shorts Film Festival; and won the award for “Best Indie Film” at the Chicago Indie Film Awards. Even in the early festival stages, the film is demonstrating great success!

At the end of January, Patrick flew up to Haida Gwaii to work on a project for B.C Housing where he spent another 2 weeks in isolation. Don’t worry! He has learned to love quiet time after 3+ months in isolation so far this pandemic.

February

February was another deadly month for InnoNative! Firstly, we launched the new and improved InnoNative website (where you are now reading this blog post)! This website offers updated services, portfolios, and workshop information!

A Golden Voice - Thumb.jpg

In early February, “A Golden Voice” a Bill Reid documentary, was selected and screened for the Available Light Film Festival located in the Yukon along with some really awesome films.

On February 14th, we officially launched the music video for “Wish We Were Older” by Angel Baribeau. It has over 60,000 views on Youtube and Angel was featured on multiple networks showcasing their new music launch.

In late February we had the pleasure of shooting for musician, C.R. Avery. In a one-day shoot, we filmed the opening music video “Only Take What You Need” for his upcoming film album, of which we also filmed the intro video for the entire 10 track piece!

March

On March 11th we launched the official InnoNative Merch Store with our first round of classic InnoNative merch. Click here to check it out!

We also received the amazing news that “A Golden Voice” was accepted and screened at the Skoden Indigenous Film Festival, DOXA Documentary Film Festival, Wairoa Māori Film Festival, with many more waiting to hear back from.

Later on in March we did a big photoshoot and stock video shoot for IBDS. We rented out Shoreline Studios and shot a deadly shoot with our Supernaturals models.

We did another Supernaturals promo shoot in Port Moody, showcasing a local jewelry designer. Even though it was freezing cold, the models did an amazing job.

At the end of March we got our second round of InnoNative merch with our New Deadly Line, including sweaters, hats, and toques. This line will only be available for a limited time so get it while you can!

To finish off March, Patrick went to Bowen Island for a week to shoot a music and cooking documentary with country/rock musician and bush cook Jody Peck. Keep your eyes out for the release!

As always, thanks for tuning in, and stay deadly!
